"In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order" -
How does one begin to remain optimistic in the face of so much seemingly going wrong in one year? When there seems to be ample reasons to remain discouraged. We've felt the weight of the world bearing down on our shoulders and it's been a lot to carry.
2020 Has been a strange, difficult, terrifying, yet - dare we say - compelling year. A year that has disrupted our normal lives, forced us to slow down and to take stock. To start a new narrative. Some of us have attempted to find the secret order in the disorder, the cosmos in the chaos. Being locked in without the ability to do the humdrum things we've taken for granted for so long, has left us contemplating just how fortunate we've been to live and travel in this breathtaking country, South Africa.
So, how do we keep on going? How do we come together to face great challenges? How do we live our beautiful saying of Ubuntu - I am because you are? Maybe it's to realise that a year like 2020 probably comes by but once a generation and maybe there's some kind of lesson to be learnt? What is the story you would want to leave behind for generations to come? Perhaps it's something along the lines of: Suffering builds character.
Viktor Frankl may have said it best:
"If there is meaning in life at all, then there must be meaning in suffering. I do not forget any good deed done to me & I do not carry a grudge for a bad one. Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation."
The pandemic is not over. But we are going to do our best to take the lessons we've learnt and to keep on adventuring; responsibly.
We've found a new love for South Africa, it's people, it's animals, the rivers, canyons, sea, forests, plains, deserts and mountains. Oh, the mountains... We want to share this new found love with our brethren, our fellow explorers. There are two things that give us immense joy: The first is the look of awe on novice traveller's faces when they see a part of South Africa they never knew existed. The second is the knowing look in an experienced traveller's eyes when seeing a mountain pass, river, forest or canyon again for the second, third or tenth time.
We want to share South Africa with you! We want to explore new frontiers! We want to see you map and model the world anew.
In the following weeks we will be doing a series of blog posts about our Great South African Escape 4x4 tour, running in February, as well as April 2021.
Come on a journey with us as we discover new frontiers and share some of the awe-inspiring places you'll get to see on this tour!
